Something New

Something New.

It’s nice to know that we all have the capability of starting something new at any point. It feels even cooler to know that someone like Picasso was once a beginner in painting, and Mozart once wasn’t familiar with playing the piano. Yet, somehow they just figured that shit out. When I was in the 3rd grade (which feels like forever ago), my teacher was really into Harry Potter. I could’ve done without Harry Potter at first (Team Ravenclaw btw), but what stuck with me was the fact that J.K Rowling had been pretty old by the time her first successful book caught on. That seemed interesting to me as a 10-year-old (or whatever 3rd graders are), and it’s even more interesting now.

There are so many times where life can seem like you are just stuck being good at what you’re good at now and can’t exactly catch on to something new. The amount of times I’ve tried to paint something and generally, the first thing to come out of my mouth is, “I’m not good at that” or “I suck at painting.” This is probably a good time to retire that phrase. The reality of it all is that I could still not be good at painting, but ultimately I won’t ever figure it out until I keep trying.

Not to toot my own horn, but I generally get pretty good at whatever the fuck I want to be good at. There was a point when I wasn’t very good at bowling; now, look at me, I’m not great yet, but I could probably join a bowling league and not be the outlier every game. I had never golfed in my life, but did you know I can putt on the green and celebrate similar to Tiger Woods during that U.S Open with the double fist pump? If you would’ve told me this about ten years ago, I likely would’ve had a tough time believing that.

So, the next time you come across something, and your first thought is, “I’m not sure I’d be very good at this,” take a deep breath and go at it with some open-mindedness. Meanwhile, I can go look up these YouTube videos for how to play a Ukelele.
